SHBCC News Update – March 2026

At long last the weather is easing and some work has begun on the grounds. The outfield has been cut and the square rolled at the Bridge and is looking good, it’s a bit slower at the Castle which doesn’t drain as well but is progressing.

It was recently reported that a lady’s team would be formed. At their first training session 30 women and girls turned up! Initially it is hoped to play “Softball” friendlies until such time that a league is formed.

Throughout February both junior and senior nets are being well attended and there is a bit of a buzz with so many youngsters pushing for places in the senior teams. The junior representative (N.Yorks) boys are training at Ampleforth College and some of the County Age Group (CAG) boys, who are netting three times a week at Headingly, will have a day at the Centre of Excellence at Loughborough University – an experience in itself.

On paper the 1st and 2nd teams are starting to evolve, some of the younger elements of both sides have been working hard through the winter to improve technique and strength and hopefully come April will have points to prove. It could be a young side with many under 20 pushing for places.

The National Village Cup fixtures have just been released. We have Dunnington away in the first round on Sunday 26th April. A tough fixture under any circumstances.
