SHBCC News Update – April 2026
All the indoor nets finished on 29th March but through no fault of the club several of the pre-season friendlies were cancelled at a late stage making it difficult to get replacements. However, some cricket has been organised for early through to mid-April ahead of the start of the season on 25th April.
Saturday 11th April saw the first cricket of the season at the Bridge with the visit of Emley Clarence from the Huddersfield League captained by former SHB player Jamie Hopper against Bridge 2nd XI. After some good cricket on a cold day Bridge won by 51 runs. Olly Shepherd, a 16-year-old with Yorkshire junior experience, retired 42 not out, as did skipper Jack Hugill on 29 not out. Aditya Mydeo added some push to the innings and was top score with 47. Matthew Maltby also added some impetus to the batting finishing on 40 retired giving a total of 214 for 3 in 45 overs. The bowling was led by the usual suspects with Sam Giannini picking up 3 for 34 off 8 overs with Aditya, Olly Shepherd and Danny Cass all picked up 2 wickets a piece to limit Emley to 163 all out. Yorkshire capped 15-year-old George Hanson had a good day behind the stumps with two catches.
Anybody interested in their children playing at the Bridge should contact the Junior Secretary on shbjuniorsecretary@gmail.com The facilities are second to none, with 4 brand new nets and some very experienced coaches. You don’t have to splash out on new equipment straight away as the club can supply a great selection of pre-used whites and boots.
Juniors 13 and over who are deemed capable are encouraged to play senior cricket for 3rds/ 4ths or Sunday Vale league.
Rockets 4 years plus and U9 practice started on Friday 17th April with other junior training nights scheduled for Thursday and Friday nights. Ladies Softball training is on Tuesday nights. For more info on dates and times, please contact the Junior Secretary via the email above. Senior training takes place on Wednesday evenings.
It was recently announced that Wills Bennison has been named as Wisden’s “Schools Cricketer of the Year”. This is great news and we all hope that this will be a great County year for Wills.
