SHBCC News Update – June 2024

Cricket has been played despite the many showers and though some matches have been lost the ground staff have worked wonders to get games on.

A bit about the juniors, where we have placed a good part of our future. Many have been playing Representative Cricket at various ages groups and levels.

Nick Armitage, Otto Bowles, Zac Powell and Riley Hurst are in York & District U9s and U12’s. Nick, Zac and Riley are also in North Yorks squads. Reuben McBride, Magnus Bowles and Jake Popplewell made it into York & District U13s and Olly Lamb – North Yorks U14. Three Bridge boys – Sam Giannini, Dan O’Conner and Olly Lamb have been selected for The York Hub U16 group which is a pink ball, coloured clothing National 20/20 competition cumulating with a final at Lords. They have won through to the regional final with wins over Glasgow and Middlesborough – the highlight of the latter was a hat-trick for Sam Giannini.

Sam Giannini was selected for York & District U15s playing their games through May half term and have qualified for the final on 23rd June. Unfortunately, the U13s were beaten in the semis but Reuban McBride excelled in one of the group games with 5 wickets in a four-over spell for 3 runs.

The senior teams have had a difficult month. 1st XI lost in the last over in the cup against Doncaster. Good contributions from Hardik Tamore 85 and Sam Beales 44 and Jonty Moorhouse 4/41 unfortunately weren’t enough.

Another loss at Castleford when the Bridge capitulated to only register 68 all out chasing 83 on a very tricky wicket. Will Bennison 3/23 and Dean Coote 4/6 were the bowling stars but despite a battling 32 from Alex Liley it wasn’t to be.

They then contrived to lose from a winning position against Hull Zingari losing by 6 runs having bowled them out for 177. Moorhouse was again the pick of the bowlers 4/46 and there were half centuries from Mark Fisher and Harry Sutcliffe.

Another defeat came at the hands of Woodhouse Grange where Adam Fisher started well with 83 backed up by Tamore 34 and Bennison 30. A decent total of 203 wasn’t enough and defeat came with Woodhouse losing only one wicket.

However, the 1st XI had a good win against Stamford Bridge by 8 wickets knocking off 127 in 29 overs – Liley, Hardik and Bennison did the job with the bat. Mark Fisher with 4 wickets was the pick of the bowlers.

The 2s have not fared much better with losses against Acomb, Knaresborough and York. The highlight of the month was a great win against Malton by 3 wickets. Danny Cass with 4 wickets supported with the bat by Kiran Chakraborty 42 and Isaac Giannini 67 made it a good day! The game against York was noteworthy for 15-year-old Sam Giannini opening the bowling for the first time at this level and finishing with 3/37. Despite his efforts York scored 203-9 having been 87 for 8. Batting was led by Chakraborty 30 and Revaant Rakyan with 31 but faltered at 134 all out.

The 3s and 4s have had mixed results as well but there have been some great contributions from 13-year-olds Magnus Bowles, Harry Goodwill, Reuben McBride, Jake Popplewell, Riley Hirst and 14-year-old Olly Lamb.

The 4 sides sit at 4th, 9th, 5th and 8th in their respective leagues. The 3s are also through to the 2nd round of the Midgeley Cup with an impressive win against Clifton Alliance.
