SHBCC News Update – May 2024
At long last the season got underway on Saturday 20th April with a couple of practice games at the Bridge with over 50 members taking part.
The 1st XI has started well in the Premier League with wins over Scarborough at home and a great win at Driffield together with another win at home to Harrogate. The 30 points from these games together with 4 from a rained-off match gives them 34 points and 3rd place in the league behind Castleford and York.
Against Scarborough they chased down 192 with 5 overs to spare with a great 50 from Will Bennison ably supported by Adam Fisher and Alex Liley. The wickets were shared but Dave Hull’s 3 for 40 in 13 over was game changing.
Against Driffield an excellent 63 from Hardik Tamore helped the team to a respectable total of 220. Driffield never really stayed in the game collapsing to 111 all out. Wickets for Skipper Mark Fisher 3/36 and some excellent figures from the spinners Dean Coote 3/12 and Jonty Moorhouse 2/19 saw us home with relative ease.
The Harrogate game was a last ball nail-biter chasing down 176. The wickets were shared among the spinners with David Hull’s great economy of 1.67 in 12 overs leading the way. Adam Fisher gave a great start with 50 followed up with 37 from Will Bennison, and a fighting 15 from Sam Beales saw them home.
The 2nd XI has had a mixed start with a good win against newcomers Bilton in Ainsty who managed 205 on what was a good wicket. Danny Cass 2/50, Harry Sutcliffe 2/20, Dean Coote 3/46 and Ben Harrison shared the wickets. Skipper Jack Hugill opened up with a steady 65, supported by 28 from Kirin Chakraborty and then a great knock from Harry Sutcliffe (57) saw them home with 3 overs to spare.
The wheels came off against Fairburn where they were bowled out for 161 with only Jordan Grose in runs with 45. Fairburn knocked them off in 35 overs for the loss of 5 wickets.
Against Studley Royal, having contained the visitors to 179, lost on the last ball by 3 runs despite a great 53 from Matt Maltby. Ravaant Rakyan opened his account for the club with 2/31 off 10 overs.
Another great knock of 81 by Matt Maltby failed to prevent defeat at Harrogate where some poor bowling and fielding allowed Harrogate to amass 256 for 4. There was a decent start from skipper Jack Hugill and Tatenda Shuttleworth followed up by Matt Maltby’s innings was to no avail, finishing on 194 for 8.
The 3rd XI has had a good start. After the first game as rained off against Green Hammerton they have had wins at home to Scarcroft, away at Saxton and Copmanthorpe. There have been runs for Rich Ainley and Geoff Scofield ably supported by Travis Bowles and Andy Frank. All of the bowlers have weighed in but good to see several junior players in the wickets.
The 4th XI has had a mixed start with a couple of rain-offs and a couple of losses leaving them with only 8 points from a possible 40 but good to see our youth policy starting to pay off with some talented youngsters breaking through.
The club seems to be in good fettle and looks forward to a successful season.
