SHBCC – News Round Up – June 2025
TWO NEW COUNTY PLAYERS
Two of our juniors, who went through the regional programme with North Yorkshire, have been selected for the Yorkshire County squads, Zac Powell U12 and Reuben McBride U14. We hope they both do well.
The rest of our junior programme is in full flow with all of our sides performing well and sitting in reasonable positions in their various leagues
Still on juniors, it’s great to report that, under the guidance of Caroline Bell, a girls’ team has played their first match this year. U11 girls lost by one run to New Earswick.
Throughout the summer we are hosting girls only cricket sessions at the Bridge ground on Thursdays, 6.30 – 7.30 pm and Fridays. 6.15 – 7.15 pm. No booking required, just turn up and make yourself known to Caroline.
In senior cricket, the 1st XI has started well and sit third in the league behind runaway leaders Castleford.
At home to York (2nd in league) they were badly beaten losing by 78 runs, all of the top order failed to contribute with Mark Fisher top scoring with 41. Mark was also pick of the bowlers with 3 for 47.
Having had a week off due to Scarbrough dropping out of the league, they bounced back to beat Beverley by 64 runs. Tom Shorthouse hit 46 and backed it up with 3 for16, ably supported by Revaant Rakyan with a quickfire 77 and 2 for 31.
Castleford came next and although the batters got starts, they didn’t go on and though we had two good bowling stints from Revaant and Tom Shorthouse we came up 3 runs short.
Castleford came again to the Bridge in the National 20/20 and again were too strong winning by 20 runs.
Last year’s champions Clifton Alliance came next but didn’t offer much, being bowled out for 91, Dave Hull with 5 for 21. Bridge did lose four wickets in the chase but a fighting 43 from Alex Liley secured the points.
The 1st XI then traveled to Driffield a little short of batting, however after a see-saw ride Driffield posted 230 for 5 with Revaant being the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 40. Bridges openers fell cheaply before Mark Fisher bedded in for the long haul with 57 off 116 deliveries to keep Bridge in the game until Revaant turned it around with 57 off 33 balls. The tail saw them home with 3 overs to spare.
On Father’s Day, with only five regular first teamers in the side, the Bridge went to Woodhouse Grange for round 2 of the K3 Cup. Sam Giannini ripped through 3 of the top 4 batters for 25 but Woodhouse recovered to post 195 in the 40 overs. The reply was laid by Jonty Moorhouse and Revaant with the Giannini brothers helping the total, but came up 32 short.
The 2nd XI had a close game against Studley Royal, dropping five catches to lose by 3 runs. Batting first, 213 looked 20 or 30 short as it proved to be. Jack Hugill laid the way but was not backed up with much else. We bowled well enough to win it with Sam Giannini’s 3 wickets and Danny Cass with 2, but the dropped catches cost us the match.
The 2nds then started a decent run of results, starting at the postage stamp of a ground at South Milford where, batting first accumulated a massive 309 for 6, with Matthias Paltridge hitting a near club record of 170 off 136 balls. He was supported by skipper Hugill, Rob Stevens and Kiran Chakraborty. S/Milford managed 189 with three wickets apiece for Sam Giannini and Danny Cass.
On then to the visit of Whitkirk to the Bridge, who were bowled out for 180 with Angad Bhabra getting 3 for 45 and 2 each for Adi Mydeo and Rollo Storey. The chase was again all about Matthais with 101 not out off 70 balls, ably supported by Jack Hugill with 42.
Selby away came next on what looked like an iffy day for cricket but turned out well. Batting first Selby managed 195 with wickets for Tom Appleton (2) and Angad (3). The chase was more or less another Matthais show with 82 supported again by skipper Hugill with 58 on their way to an 8-wicket win.
Back home for the visit of Bilton in Ainsty who got 207 in their 50 overs with two wickets each for Cass, Giannini and Dean Coote. The reply was somewhat brutal, knocking them off in 37 overs with Matthais 35, Adi Mydeo 66 and a wonderful century from skipper Hugill.
The third XI have had a difficult time with unavailability this month. Bank Holiday weekend saw them go to Bolton Percy where they lost by 8 wickets. Reuben McBride top scored with 33 in a total of 112 all out and took the only wicket to fall to a bowler, finishing with 1 for 16 off 5 overs. They then went down to Bilton in Ainsty having been bowled out for 86 but bounced back to tie with Woodhouse scoring 190 each. The young Harry Goodwill and not so young Geoff Schofield combined with 37 apiece to lead the batting with Rich Armitage nearly getting them home with 4 for 35. Against a strong Clifton side, they lost by 6 wickets. Aaron Cowton’s 53 the batting highlight, with Harry Goodwill’s 1 for 29 off 8 overs a steady effort. They bounced back against York in what turned into a thriller. York amassed 255 with skipper Dan Tuite taking 4 for 27 backed up by Jake Popplewell with 3 for 54. The reply was constant with the top four contributing. Charlie Foster top scored with 57 well supported by Archie Goodwill with 56 and it was left to 14-year-old Jake Popplewell hit the last ball of the innings down the ground for 4 to secure a great win.
The fourth team have had a mixed results the best being against Copmanthorpe where they chased down 149 with youngsters taking wickets – 12-year-old George Bell taking 2 for 26, and 12-year-old Zac Powell leading the batting with 50 not out with his father with him for 29. They went down to Stockton and Hopgrove with a very depleted side as they also did to Pocklington.
The newly formed Sunday Vale League side have won 5 from 7 and supported by a plethora of youngsters all punching above their weight. Rory Williams, Max Laycock, Joe Elleker and Alex Bell are just some of the outstanding performances produced.
