SHBCC – News Round Up April 2025

Another season started with friendly matches on 12th April for 1st and 2nd XIs both against Barnard Castle from the North Yorks/South Durham league. The 1st XI fared best with a convincing win. Ben Gill managed a half century with Alex Lilley and Clarke Doughney contributing to a competitive total of 166 in 45 overs. The wickets were evenly shared to bowl out Barnard Castle for 83.

The 2nd XI had a tougher afternoon posting 177 with Jack Hugill contributing 31 to add to Harry Sutcliffe’s top score of 34. Angad Bhabra was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 35 in 10 overs but Barnard Castle managed to knock them off in 40 overs. If early catches had been taken it might have been a different result.

On Sunday 13th we travelled to Forge valley in the preliminary round of the Voneus National Village Cup and managed to bowl the opposition out for 166. Two wickets apiece for Archie Goodwill, Tom Appleton and Matt Maltby. The reply was led with Jack Hugill and Matthew Maltby with half centuries to win with 7 overs left. On 27th April we met Killinghall at home in first round proper. Having posted 187-8 (Matt Maltby 53), we were defeated by 6 wickets.

A recent addition to the SHB fold is Matthais Paltridge from Christchurch New Zealand. He’s a top order bat who bowls a bit of off spin. With the number of new signings and some of the youngsters a year older there is great optimism throughout the club that the potential is there for a good season. It will certainly be a lot of fun!

Once again there is great confidence in the junior section with Olly Lamb U15s, Reuben McBride and Harry Goodwill U14, Riley Hirst U13, Zac Powell, Otto Bowles U12, and Nick Armitage U11 all in the North Yorkshire squads. Although no longer a junior Sam Giannini is in the North Yorks U16 squad.

The junior section hopes to field two sides at all three age groups which is a big ask of the coaches but they are up for it!

Still on juniors it is hoped under the guidance of Caroline Bell that a girls’ team will be up and running this year.

WE ARE HOLDING GIRLS ONLY CRICKET SESSIONS AT THE BRIDGE GROUND STARTING FRIDAY 25TH APRIL6.15PM TO 7.15PM

With favourable early spring weather, the grounds are in great condition, Ryan Pepper has done a great job on the square. We had a “work day/weekend” in early April where a lot of small outstanding repair and painting jobs were taken care of.

And finally, some of you may have noticed the new Padel Farm (loosely a short form of indoor tennis) which has opened up at Fridlingtons. SHBCC has entered into a partnership with The Padel Farm which includes discounted prices for SHB members. Might be worth considering social membership at “The Bridge” ??
