SHBCC News Update – June 2026

The 1st XI made easy work of Hull Zingari winning by 6 wickets with Mark Fisher the pick of the bowlers with a 5 for. Chasing only 87 it was all over in 17 overs with Alex Jenkins top scoring with 26. Unfortunately they couldn’t continue their winning ways and went down to Carlton Towers on bank holiday Monday losing by 2 runs for a 4 point return. Mark Fisher and Tom Shorthouse 3 wickets each and Shorthouse 48 runs were the pick. They were back to winning ways with a commanding defeat of York. Chasing 171 they knocked it off in 37 overs with Tom Shorthouse and Mark Fisher 4 wickets each. Will Bennison 47 and Alex Jenkins 62 no. were the main contributors. Next up at the Bridge were Driffield, always a hard side to beat, but Bridge bowled them out for 143 with Mark Fisher the leading the way with 4 wickets. The top three knocked them off in 20 overs with Will Bennison 64 and Adam Fisher 46.

For the first round of the K3 Cup the 1st XI visited Cleethorpes. Despite a few absentees they came home victorious by 9 wickets thanks to a magnificent 89 off 91 balls from Matthias Paltridge. Conor Hyde 3, and Mark Fisher 4, were the pick of the bowlers. League leaders Castleford away were next and with three changes to the side it would be a challenge that they eventually stepped up to winning by 6 runs. Having posted an underwhelming  170 with Alex Jenkins top score on 54 they proceeded to bowl Castleford out for 162. Tom Shorthouse was standout with 4/26 off 13 overs. They sit second to Castleford by 2 points.

The 2nd XI were badly beaten at Sessey by 8 wickets having been bowled out for 153. A few batters got in but couldn’t go on to decent knocks. The Bank holiday brought another batting horror show at Acomb. Bowled out for 128 they were never in the game and went down by 7 wickets. However, it was good to see Tatenda back in the runs with 51 and Tom Appleton back after injury with 1 for 27. Against Fairburn the 2nds pulled themselves back from those poor results. Batting first, Fairburn were held to 165 with Giannini 3 for 38 and Ben Harrison 5 for 39. 15 year old keeper George Hanson took 3 good catches behind the stumps. The runs were knocked off in 36 overs with Kirean Chakraborty 48. Sunday 31st took the 2nd XI to Bridlington for the T20 Blast group day  where they saw off Bridlington and Brandsburton to head to finals day on 14th July at Sessey. The 2nds continued their good form in the league with a 31 run victory over Londsborough Park. Bridge were bowled out for 154 with only Tommie Botha’s 50 showing form. Londsborough started well but slow eventually fell to the spin of Ben Harrison 3/31 and an aggressive second spell of from Sam Giannini 4 for 30. Back at home to face Bridlington they were put in and collapsed to 41 for 5 before the ship was steadied by Matt Maltby 38 and Freddie Iles 28 and a very mature knock of 36 from George Hanson. Then the fireworks started with Dan Cass 60no off 40 and Sam Giannini  22 off 14 to post 244.  Brid started well but fell to the spin of Tommie Botha 6 for 29 off 10, Bridge winning by 98 runs.

The 3rd team went down to Bolton Percy at home. All out in 38 overs with only Geoff Schofield 24 and Naithan McBride 26 showing with the bat Rich Armitage was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets. They produced a real Houdini act on bank holiday at Ovington. Having been bowled out for 69 they rallied to win by 1 run. Skipper Dan Tuite 4 for 22 in 10 straight overs and teenager Max Laycock 3 for 8 off 8 overs. They continued where they left off with a great win at New Earswick. Chasing 209 they won by 7 wickets. Wickets were shared but the batting was dominated by Charlie Foster 73 and Jake Popplewell 68 no. Another good win came at the expense of Easingwold by 8 wickets. Having bowled them out for 82, wickets for Danny Cass 4 for 18 and Harry Goodwill 3 for 7 the runs were knocked off by Archie Goodwill 25 and Danny Cass 36no. Woodhouse Grange away would potentially be a difficult trip but bowling them out for 106 – Dan Tuite 4 for 28 and youngster Max Laycock 3 for 22 were the pick. The mature members, Geoff Schofield 30no and Naithan Mcbride 38no, knocked them off in 24 overs. They currently sit top of the table.

The 4ths unfortunately lost both holiday weekend matches to Rufforth and Marston by 6 wickets and Ovington also by 6 wickets. There were some excellent performances from the youngsters. They bounced back against Heslington racking up 218 with Sam Nellist 55, Dave Sladen 70 and Chris Small 51. They then bowled Heslington out for 52 with George Bell taking 5. Away to Duncombe Park fell foul of the weather with points divided. Next up, top of the table Saxton at the Castle. Having been asked to bat they posted a good 171 for 8 with skipper Dave Sladen top score with 88. They bowled well but Saxton reached the goal in 31 overs.

The junior section are all doing well with both U13 and U15 winning through to the next round of the national cup and both are also unbeaten in the league. A highlight was a home game for the 15s against York who posted a difficult chase of 139, openers Harry Goodwill and Wilf Metcalfe made it look easy with some powerful hitting to finish it with half centuries each retired, Goodwill’s strike rate was 196, Jake Popplewell mopped up the rest with 22 not out.
