SHBCC News Update – July 2026
The 1stXI travelled to Harrogate in expectation after their win at Castleford but to no avail being soundly beaten by 8 wickets. Adam Fisher 53 and Sam Beales 34 were the standout batters. Harrogate knocked it off with ease in 34 overs only losing 2 wickets.
A complete reversal came with the visit of Woodhouse Grange bowling them out for 178, with Alex Wood’s amazing 6 for 30 in 11 overs. Although not all easy going, the total was reached in the 48 over with Matthias Paltridge not out on 73.
Away to Beverley brought another form surprise, going down by 4 wickets. 176 was never going to be enough and Beverley knocked it off in 39 overs albeit for the loss of 6 wickets. Matthias and Clark Doughney were the only bats over 30 runs. Mark Fisher and Conor Hyde managed to extract 5 between them but to no avail.
The K3 Cup came up on the Sunday against Cawthorne away. It was always a tough ask with 6 players in the side with a 1 at the beginning of their age! Cawthorne batted first and posted a formidable 249 in the 40 overs, Sam Giannini with 2 for 22 from his 8 was the pick of the bowlers, the rest somewhat expensive. The reply started well with Matthias 30 off 29, the innings fell apart after that to be bowled out in 22 overs for 130.
Next, the league leaders Clifton Alliance came to the Bridge and batted first posting a credible 246. Mark Fisher 3/52 and Tom Shorthouse 4/76 were the pick of the bowlers although Sam Giannini, making his 1st XI debut, bowled well for no reward. The reply was a roller coaster with the loss of early wickets but opener Mark Fisher carved out a fantastic century well supported by Matthais (46) and a good cameo towards the end from Sam Beales (24 no) but unfortunately Bridge came up 7 runs short.
The 2nd XI had a relatively easy win over neighbours Easingwold by 7 wickets. Batting first, Easingwold only managed 151 with wickets going to Ben Harrison 3/33 and Tommie Botha 2/44. The chase was dominated by Botha 46 and Oli Shepherd 45.
At Harrogate, with a very young and inexperienced side, the 2nds won the toss and batted first to post 235 with Jack Hugill and Kiran Chakraborty leading the way with 59 and 69 respectively, Tommie Botha chipped in with 51 no and 15-year-old Harry Goodwill run out for 25. On another hot day bowling was not easy with a limited attack and Harrogate knocked them off for the loss of 5 wickets. The evergreen Rich Armitage was exceptional with 12 overs 2 for 46, Sam Giannini had 2 for 57.
League leaders Woodhouse Grange came next at the Bridge. Winning the toss, they elected to bat and posted a big but not insurmountable total of 265. Danny Cass had a five for albeit somewhat expensive. Sam Giannini’s only wicket was his 100th for the 2nd team, a phenomenal achievement at only 17. The reply was stilted, losing early wickets. It was when Tommie Botha (92) and Rob Stevens (82) came together that things took a different turn, with the game only settled when Harry Goodwill (28 off 17 balls) was run out with Bridge losing by 3 runs.
The 2nd XIs next opponent was Patrington away -long drive. Batting first they posted a very credible 267 on a difficult wicket. Openers Oli Shepherd (51) and Jack Hugill (100) giving a great start, then 51 not out from Botha and 39 not out from Cass put the icing on the cake. It was a total that always looked beyond Patrington who were bowled out for 160. The wickets were shared but Rich Armitage but in another great performance with 3 for 6 off 4 overs.
The Sunday brought 2nd team to the T20 Blast Plate finals day at Sessay. Facing Woodhouse Grange in the semi final they bowled them for 147, Sam Giannini 3/17 off his 4 overs. It was a total that should have been reachable but sadly not, coming up 12 short despite 46 from Hugill and 29 from Botha. Woodhouse Grange went on to beat Acomb in the final.
The 3s put up a great fight against Stockton and Hopgrove. Chasing 245 they came close with a great knock of 147 from Rich Reynolds which left them 22 short but picking up 4 points.
Away at Yapham next the opposition were bowled out for a meagre 113 with youngsters Olly Lamb 4 for 28 and Max Laycock 3 for 22 the pick of the bowlers. The total was reached in 21 overs for the loss of 3 wickets, 31 for Rich Reynolds and 32 for Lamb.
Next, batting first at Bishopthorpe the 3s posted 206 for 7 thanks to 47 from Jake Popplewell and 61 from skipper Dan Tuite. Tuite again excelled with the ball with 5 for 33 supported by youngster Magnus Bowles 3 for 57 to bowl Bishy out for 198.
The 4ths came up against a very strong Knaresborough side who set a formidable total of 236, Travis Bowles with credible figures of 4/33. Thirteen year old Otto Bowles bowled two overs finishing with 2/2. Their attack was too much and Bridge who collapsed to 85 all out with only Kiran Koneti getting above 20.
Unfortunately then another idle day for the 4s with Dringhouses conceding, however the 10 points were welcome. Copmanthorpe came to the Castle and winning the toss elected to bat posting 190, youngsters Zac Powell and Jai Prasad had seven wickets between them. Unfortunately the batting didn’t fire apart from a battling 48 from Joe Ellerker and were bowled out for 145.
The Vale Sunday side continue to go well giving opportunity for many youngsters to play adult cricket. They had a great win at Pickering where Wilf Metcalfe hit a century and his young brother Toby had a five for.
The juniors ae having a great season, the U15s are through to the playoffs with 100% record with one to play and through to the cup semis where they will meet Malton.
The U13s are through to the national T20 final against Shepley at home with a prospect of hosting the winners of Lancs/Cumbria section. They are also through to the league playoffs with 100% record and a cup final with Woodhouse Grange.
The U11s are undefeated in the league with a few games left and are through to the cup final with York as opponents
There is no doubt that the success of the juniors not only comes from good coaching but also their exposure to adult cricket.
The ladies continue to enjoy their softball albeit with mixed results, win some lose some!
