SHBCC News Round Up – October 2025

After a very successful season the hard work started on the grounds where the Bridge square was treated to a levelling process which basically takes out all the humps and hollows that develop over years of play. The work was overseen by Ryan Pepper as has the other seasonal treatments that take place as usual to create what is traditionally one of the best playing surfaces in the league. Chris Harrison has transformed the Castle Ground over the last couple of seasons into the envy of many clubs in Galtres 3 and 4. Any playing member at SHB should be very proud of their playing facilities. Even more so now with the great news that we have 4 brand new nets, two by the road and two at the clubhouse. These will allow much more intense coaching and practice.

On the 30th September good news just kept coming. Matty Fisher after his successful move to Surrey last season has been called back into the England fold with selection for the Lions tour shadowing the Ashes side to Australia. We wish Matty well on his climb back up the international ladder.

Wills Bennison has been rewarded for his explosion onto the county scene with selection for the England U19 squad to tour the West Indies, again we wish him well.

Closer to home another great opportunity has come for 14-year-old Reuben McBride who has been given an EPP slot (Emerging Players Programme) for Yorkshire. Reuben had a great first season for Yorkshire U14s plus a couple of EPP games where he did enough to be retained for winter training. Most of the boys in this category will be 16 and either in or verging on academy.

Yorkshire Regional Cricket has announced dates around the beginning of November for their Observation days, if you feel your child should be involved get in touch with Andrew Bell (Junior Sec.)

On the recruitment front the club are delighted to have signed Connor Hyde from Castleford. Connor has been part of the League Champions for 12 years. Hopefully his experience will be beneficial to the younger element and with the 2nd team now in YPLN Premier League 2 all recruitment will be very welcome as the challenge only gets greater, but that’s why they play.

We are also glad to welcome back to the club Alex Jenkins who played his junior cricket at the Bridge before joining York. Alex is top/mid order bat and exceptional wicket keeper. He is still at school and joins other St Peters boys enjoying their cricket at Moor Farm. Other potential signings are in the pipeline and hopefully along with our own home-grown talent will continue to bring the club success. Disappointingly however, Alex Liley has decided to move and takes his talents to Stamford Bridge, the club wishes him well and will clearly miss him.

After the achievements of the York Hub at Lords the boys and families were treated to a lovely reception at Clifton Alliance to celebrate their achievements. For anybody who doesn’t know, the MCC Hub is open to all children from 11-16 who are not in fee paying education. The coaching through winter is free and can be accessed by going to “play cricket MCCF York Hub” or picko73@sky.com

For those of you interested in statistics a look at Sheriff Hutton Bridge Play cricket Stats page makes interesting reading – Matthias Paltridge –1253 runs, Jack Hugill 1034 runs and junior Harry Goodwill 880 runs.
