News Round Up – September 2023

Thank you all who supported us with the blue tokens for the Tesco Community Grants. Voting closed at end September, so we now await the outcome.

This month was a mixed bag with of results with good news that 2nds and 4ths secured their status for next season. The 2nds finish comfortable 9th and 4ths in 8th in their divisions. Although the 3rds weren’t bottom, they go down with bottom club York.

The 1sts finished 7th with good wins against Malton, and Sessay but a poor loss to Champions Castleford.

The 2nds secured survival with a great win against Studley Royal. Chasing a modest 177 with wickets for Rob Stevens (4) and Danny Cass (3) they then stole the show with 49 and 56 no respectively. They had a poor defeat at Acomb chasing 168 (Dan Tuite 4 wkts) but were bowled out for 78 with youngster Archie Goodwill top scoring with 36. Bolton Percy was a relatively easy victory with Harry Sutcliffe 48 and Dan Tuite 30, Danny Cass finished it off with 5 for 49. Carlton Towers was always going to be difficult with them pursuing promotion, despite 3 wickets for Rob Stevens and a battling 52 for Toby Latham it was an easy win for Carlton. The final game against the “old enemy” Easingwold fizzled out to an easy win for newly crowned champions Easingwold – we will see them in the ECB Premier Division next season.

The 3rds battled hard but never scored enough runs and lost their last four games despite some good performances from youngsters Sam Giannini, Archie Goodwill and Jake Casken.

The 4ths secured a good position in the league with wins against Duncombe Park and Rufforth and an amazing tie with Stillington scoring 184 each, Travis Bowles 42 and Vince Coan 46 and a great performance from U13s Isaac Beddall with 3 wickets for 26. The last match against Rufforth turned out to be a match in which the more mature players struck back with Travis Bowles and Naithan McBride 3 and 4 wickets respectively and Martin Savage 52 not out. Life in the old dogs yet!

So, all in all not a bad club season without anything really spectacular apart from the rise of some good young players. The youth policy will pay dividends in the next couple of years.

We had a great Junior presentation day at the club with a BBQ and auction – some really good prizes contributed from Matty Fisher.

Reuben McBride’s captaincy was sorely tested in the U12s York and District final against Aire Wharfe, who went on to win by 56 runs. However, he managed to take a side to a final that you would say wasn’t bursting with talent but gelled well together.

Thank you to all who have supported us during the season and special thanks to all our scorers.

The grounds are now being “put to bed”.

Finally, please support us at the Jumble Sale on 21st October at the Village Hall.
