News Round Up – September 2022
The season finished, as it had progressed all summer, with mixed results but on the whole positively. The 1st XI finished their campaign with a poor defeat against Woodhouse Grange allowing them to join us at joint third in the league. We shouldn’t be too disappointed with our position behind York and Champions Driffield who both financially reward players. Our overseas player, Dulash Udayanga, made a great contribution this year scoring over 1100 runs.
The 2nd XI finished with a bang with victories over Studley Royal and bottom placed York 3rds. The Studley game was dominated by three bowlers; Dave Hull, Danny Cass and Rob Stevens taking three wickets a piece to bowl the opposition out for 142 before Rob Stevens and Isaac Giannini with 35 and 38 not out respectively at better than a run a ball brought a swift end in 35 overs.
The York game was a bit of a non-event, bowling them out for 75 in 38 overs with Isaac Giannini the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 12 in 6 overs. The batters knocked the runs off in 12 overs with skipper Jack Hugill 40 not out. The team have had a good year fielding a young side and with some gaining 1st XI experience. They finished a very creditable 5th in the league.
The 3rd XI lost their last two games to Pocklington and Heworth but had a great season for bringing through so many youngsters into senior cricket. In the last two games they had eight players under 17 and five under 15. Against Pocklington a couple of decent knocks from Andy Frank and Tom Magee weren’t enough and Bridge finished 136 all out which wasn’t enough to defend although a good effort was made in reducing them to 5 in 30 overs. The Heworth game could have been one that got away. Good knocks from Martin Savage 42, Rollo Storey 24 and Sam Gianinni 22 gave the bowlers 151 to defend. Heworth reached the total in 40 overs despite miserly spells from openers Rich Armitage and Sam Giannini both going for less than 2 an over.
The 4th team had a disappointing end with having to concede both games. However, their season was highlighted with the number of youngsters being brought into senior cricket.
In all this season the club has brought 17 juniors into the senior ranks and we are sure we can repeat this total with some new 12- and 13-year-olds next year.
The junior section of the club is strong with all age groups doing well especially the U11s who as previously reported won the league and cup double. The junior season finished with a fun day and presentation to trophy winners – a full list can be found here.
The club overall has had a very good season and the future is bright.
