News Round Up – June 2023
The season progresses with mixed results as the club continues with junior development into senior sides. Some are developing well while others are finding the leap a bit too much but are gaining valuable experience of what’s to come as they grow and get stronger.
The 1st XI are going better with good wins against Beverley, Scarborough, Driffield and a demolition of Malton with a loss to Stamford Bridge in between. Unfortunately, they also came off second best in the League 20/20 losing to both Castleford and hosts Sessay.
Beverley was won with a great batting display by Mark Fisher 107 not out, supported by Dulash Udayanga, 52. Driffield was another Mark Fisher show with 108 in a total of 303 again supported by Dulash with 64. Dave Hull was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 72 off his 13 overs.
Scarborough was a low scoring game on bank holiday Monday with 1st XI winning by 5 wickets. Chasing down 139, teenager Will Bennison scored 36 supported by Adam Fisher and Louis Foxton with 30 apiece. Earlier, Dulash took three wickets. Malton was a demolition job with Bridge scoring 333 with Mark Fisher another 100 not out and Freddie Collins 5 for 19.
Stamford Bridge was one that got away losing by 7 wickets with the bowlers not able to defend a good score.
In between, another Sunday game saw the Bridge successful against Hallam in the K3 Dental Cup by 23 runs. Good batting displays from both Tanaka Lawrence and Adam Fisher with half centuries, the bowling honours were shared around.
The 2nd XI are doing well with wins against Thirsk, Acomb and Bolton Percy and a loss against strongly fancied Knaresborough by 122 runs. A half century from ‘stand in’ skipper Tatenda Shuttleworth and 5 for 41 from Will Warren were to no avail. Thirsk was an excellent win. Defending 182, Aditya Mydeo to 4 for 26, supported by Tom Appleton with 2 for 21 and 14-year-old Sam Giannini recording his first Championship wicket. Earlier Tatenda and Owen Cowton scored 50’s. The Acomb win was another excellent result winning by 28 runs with Dave Coverdale 47 and Matt Maltby a magnificent 85. Bowling was shared between Tom Appleton 2 for 38 and Will warren 3 for 45. Bolton Percy was a bit of a non-event winning in 20 overs after bowling them out for 106.
The 3rd team are struggling with losses against Hovingham by 93 runs, Pocklington by 10 wickets and Bilton in Ainsty by 8 wickets. At Hovingham there were good knocks from Olivia Kibler, 34 and Geoff Scofield, 35 and Rich Armitage and Rory Williams led the bowling getting 3 apiece in a good effort. Apart from that it’s been thin pickings for the batters and bowlers.
4th XI recorded their first win against Duncombe Park in between losses against Hovingham and Stillington. Duncombe were bowled out for 34 resulting in a 160-run win, Wayne Fawcett scoring 55, Pete Batley 40 and Jake Casken taking 5 for 5.
Juniors have had mixed fortunes but all sit in reasonable positions in their leagues. Good news on the junior front is the number of boys selected for representative cricket. Riley Hurst and Zac Powell have been selected for York and District and North Yorkshire U11. For York and District, Reuben McBride and Jake Popplewell have been selected for U12s with McBride as captain; Olly Lamb and Zac Powell selected for U13s and Sam Gianinni for U15s. Rollo Story is to represent Yorkshire at U15.
