News Round Up – July 2023
No cricket club can exist without funding and in an effort to raise some needed funds we have been lucky to get a slot in Tesco’s Community Funding which is decided on the number of little blue tokens that you get when you shop. So, if you shop at Clifton Moor, Strensall or Huntington please support us by putting your tokens in the Sheriff Hutton Bridge slot to support junior cricket in and around Sheriff Hutton.
On the cricket front the Juniors are doing very well with U11’s in the cup final, a young U13’s in the playoffs and a renaissance from the U15s which could see them sneak into the playoffs after a dreadful start. The U9s continue to produce results with several players looking as though they could handle cricket at a higher level.
Across the juniors there have been some great individual performances. Two matches stand out a win for U13s against Acomb and U15s against York. Details of all results can be found via the website – www.sheriffhuttonbridge.co.uk. The Rockets and girls continue to flourish and will produce talent as time goes on.
Senior cricket remains a mixed bag. The 1st XI has had a good month wins over Sessay, Castleford and the highlight so far against York. Sessay was down to a great 83 for youngster Will Bennison supported by his captain Adam Fisher with a half century chasing down 192 after 3 wickets for Dulash Udayanga. Castleford was a superb 36 run win with 50’s from Dulash and Sam Beales followed up with some great bowling from Ash Watson and David Hull. They lost inexplicably to Scarborough at home with little to be said. They also lost to Woodhouse Grange by Duckworth Lewis in a game they should have won and to the same opponents in the National 20/20. However, they bounced back superbly with victory at York with the odds stacked against them. Rain reduced the match to 28 overs aside and when Bridge were bowled out for 103 it didn’t look good. Up stepped Freddie Collins with 6 for 23 and a run out to bowl to secure a 29-run win.
The 2nd team have had a tough time losing heavily to both Carlton Towers and Easingwold. Then when it looked as though they were bouncing back the rain washed out games at Pickering and York. The only high point was the purposeful decision to blood 14-year-olds, Aaron Cowton, Sam Giannini and Archie Goodwill in readiness for the future.
The 3rd XI has also had a torrid time losing to Pocklington, Heworth, Westow and Osbaldwick but with a great 8 wicket win against Dringhouses with a 50 from Vijay Jayagopal, ably supported by Neil Cowton and Martin Savage with 38 and 40. Neil Cowton also took 4 wickets.
The 4th XI had a tough time losing to Yapham and Rufforth albeit by close margins. Neil Fairweather hit a superb 91 against Rufforth to no avail.
The two’s, three’s and four’s all are desperate for wins to take them into safety. The third team in particular aiming to retain their position in Galtres 3 to avoid the gap growing too wide between 3rd and 2nd XIs.
