News Round Up – August 2022

The ups and downs of local cricket are no more apparent this month than at any time during the season.

The 1st XI chased down a huge total of 274 at Harrogate. Having toiled in very hot conditions they bowled Harrogate out in the final over and then reached the total for the loss of only four wickets with hundreds for Mark Fisher and Dulash Udayanga. Youngster, Will Bennison, contributed with a quick 27 and two wickets. The highlight of the attack was a “five for” for Ash Watson.

They then succumbed at home to both the league leaders Driffield and then Castleford, two ‘bad days at the office’. There were a few individual victories with both bat and ball but not enough together.

The club was delighted with Will Bennison’s selection to captain the North of England at the recent Bunbury festival, managing to get himself a century in one of the games!

The 2nd XI lost narrowly to Harrogate in a high scoring game going down by eight runs chasing 211. They then lost badly to Heworth falling 80 runs short chasing 231. The highest scorer in the Heworth innings was extras at 59!!

The 3rd XI suffered two bad defeats at the hands of York and Copmanthorpe. The highlight for the 3rds has been the performances of the three youngsters, Sam Giannini, Ollie Kettlewell and Archie Goodwill all contributing above their years.

The 4th XI had a good victory by 8 runs at Duncombe Park followed by a concession against Cawood. Having been bowled out in 38 overs (Will Fawcett 56 and Martin Savage 70) they contained Duncombe to 184. It was the bowling of youngsters Will Langworthy, Will Aldersley and Aaron Cowton that got them over the line. The elder statesman Neil Cowton wasn’t too shabby with figures of 11 over 2 for 15.

There hasn’t been much junior cricket with most leagues now wrapped up. The U11 Bs have played a couple of friendlies with mixed results. The important bit being the blooding of as many as possible for next season.

U11 League Winners

The highlight of our junior season has been the League and Cup double from our U11 A team. We managed to defeat Acomb convincingly in the cup final. We restricted Acomb to 80 with some tight bowling and even tighter fielding with one amazing run out from kipper Reuban McBride.  Although wicketless both Max Laycock and Will Rivis bowled miserly with Laycock only going for 3 in 3 overs and Rivis only 6 in his 3. They seemed to bat without any nerves, chasing down the score with the loss of only 4 wickets. Openers Jake Popplewell and Riley Hirst set off at a blistering pace, Hirst top scoring with 28 no, ably supported by Reuban McBride 15 no off 11 balls. It was all over in 10.5 overs.

They then played Acomb again, this time in a league decider. A win for the unbeaten Acomb would make them champions. In a very tight game SHB prevailed by 20 runs with great bowling from all the bowlers but with Max Laycock the pick with 3 wickets. The result put us on level points with Clifton Alliance and Acomb but SHB had a better Runs/wicket ratio which put us on top.

This success has come from exceptional teamwork, the boys have had their individual success but in the end it was down to teamwork instilled by the coach.

The U11 Bs finished second in their league.

The grounds are still in remarkable condition given that we have had no rain, thanks to all the ground staff who put in many unpaid hours to provide first class facilities.
