Ron’s Round Up – October 2021

Matthew Fisher (23) has been chosen as the only Yorkshire player to be included in the England Lions squad. Matthew is a fast bowler and no mean lower order bat. Having captained England U19’s to India, Matthew has suffered from many injuries in recent years, so this fitting reward for a great season with Yorkshire.

Departing on the 4th November 2021, the Lions will shadow the full test side before the start of the Ashes. They will play two inter squad games, one a 3-day game and one a 4-day game and will also take Australia A in a 4-day game. Who knows what can happen with some solid performances and injuries to front line bowlers?

Matthew has been a “Bridge” member since he was 4 or 5, following in the footsteps of his two big brothers Adam and Mark, who are Captain and vice-captain of the first team. Matthew has always been seen as a future prospect and everyone at the club are very proud of him and hope he does really well on the tour and goes on to fulfill his potential – there is no nicer lad and he deserves this big break.

On other business the club is now searching for new players at all levels but especially at the top end to give the 1st XI and 2nd XI some added experience and ability to score runs and take wickets. Our youth policy continues apace but they need time and the opportunity to play with better players.

The grounds have now been “put to bed” for the winter and are in fine fettle. The volunteer grounds staff have as usual done a great job. Instead of resting on their laurels they continue to catch up on the tidying jobs that never seem to go away. If you fancy getting involved come down to the Bridge nearly any Winter Friday morning – it’s a bit like “Last of the summer wine”!!

For those from the village who walk their dogs at the cricket ground and kept them on leads to reduce fouling, we thank you. Please continue to help us and encourage others to do the same.
