Pre-Season has been encouraging after a mixed 2017 which ended up seeing us finish 5th and exit the cups early. We have had quite a long pre-season work up which started in late January and have enjoyed the facilities at St Peters and St Olaves much more. With most of the 2017 squad being around the 20-25 age bracket there has been the usual improvement I’ve seen year on year with a few other additions pushing them hard. We have arranged friendlies across both the weekends before the season which should provide a good test and allow those pushing to join the 2018 squad opportunity. Dunnington, Driffield, Leeds University and York University will make up the majority of our pre-season work up. More details to come.
We are delighted to be welcoming Matthew home for the season. As ever, we hope that we can provide both him and Karl a good environment to enjoy their cricket when their availability allows. Other than just his ability, he will provide great advice and experience of higher levels that our lads can learn from. At the time of writing there are other people we hope will join the squad before the start of the season, other than that it will be the same faces from 2017. We continue to pursue overseas options but haven’t got VISA’s or contracts confirmed at this stage. I’m certain that competition for places will be positive in 2018 and I know all the lads are keen to put right some of our disappointments, especially with bat, from 2017.
Looking towards the opposition, I can see the race to compete at the top becoming harder as you see signings coming in from further afield. I imagine York will continue to sign players with proven records and remain very strong. Harrogate and Stamford Bridge will also continue to compete hard and WHG will be buoyed by a strong winter and will be one side to watch as the season unfolds. Although all those sides have seen many new additions I hope that our strength will come from a group of lads who are used to playing together and keen to compete in 2018.
