2019 Captains Season Preview

2019 Captains Report:

With 2019 season approaching quickly it seems a good time to give a brief update on all things ‘Senior cricket’ at SHB. Last season saw the First X1 compete at the top of the pile in Yorkshire League North until week 10 and then have a poor run of results before finishing fairly strongly with a final position of 4th. Some notable performances from Karl Carver with the ball – really coming into his own and spearheading our bowling performances. With the bat Dulash (Udayanga) made a great debut season as overseas and turned out to be a league star with some stand out innings that were superb to watch. We probably learned some good lessons from losing our way in the middle of the season and working hard on the lessons learned in order to put improvements in place for the 2019 season. We say goodbye to Rob Pinder, who returns to Staxton for the 2019 season. Rob has been at the heart of the successes we’ve had over the last 5+ years and will be a big hole to replace and thank him for some great cricket played at The Bridge. We welcome back Eddie Barnes from the Yorkshire Academy and can’t wait to see him back at The Bridge. We look forwards to challenging his cricket to help with his pursuit of senior honours at Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

So far, pre-season training is 5 weeks in and has been well attended. Many young players ‘chomping at the bit’ and looking to put pressure for places in the first team which is great to see and the superb achievement of the 2ndTeam promotion (in 2018) to YDSCL Premier Division is a driving the excitement around the club. Having Eddie and Matthew doing some technique work with the bowlers has been great to see and much appreciated by all. Karl Carver has spent a successful winter out in Melbourne scoring 544 runs (averaging 34) and taking 30 wickets at an impressive average of 21. He also helped Dandenong to a T20 Vic Super Slam Conference win which saw the final played at the illustrious Melbourne Cricket Ground and will miss the National Finals over in Adelaide due to flying back to join up with YCCC. Dulash (Dilly) has started his Sri Lankan first-class season and has many 50 over, T20 and 3 Day matches between now and 17th April so will no doubt hit the ground running when he returns for the YLN season.

Looking forwards on the pitch, the club will be traveling to Sheffield for a pre-season tour and will see 3 tough fixtures and plenty of camaraderie before the Easter weekend before starting the season Away to newly promoted Beverley. We are delighted to have drawn the YLN T20 Group stage at home against Yorkshire Academy and Scarborough on Sun May 19th and also have a bye in Round 1 and straight to an Away fixture at either Doncaster or Elscar, both YLS teams. We won’t be competing in the ECB Club Knockout this season, however will be re-entering the National Village Knockout which will see the club return to the competition held in such fond memories at the club and give some promising young players (and less promising but still quality elder statesmen) opportunity to join the legend of the competition.

Personally, I think I was fairly accurate in hindsight with my 2018 predictions, so we’ll see how this one goes. Still looking at York and WHG to be the strongest sides to be beat in 2019, both very good at home and actively improving their playing squad every season- closely followed by Stamford Bridge who have done a pretty ‘comprehensive job’ on us last 2 seasons. Castleford have signed some strong players and imagine they might see a resurgence and will have ability to beat all sides on their day- very much a team to watch! All the other sides also have stand out players and it should provide a competitive league which I imagine will be as exciting as last year. As for us, all eyes are on improvements we know we need to make combined with EXCITEMENT FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON. We should be playing some fairly exciting cricket and some good tough fixtures so make sure you get along to watch/ support!!
